Impact

Education

• Students learn about the benefits of sustainable innovation, energy efficiency, renewable energy and green building technologies.  As the next generation of engineers, architects, builders, and communicators, participants will use this knowledge in their studies and future careers.
• Students learn and experience collaboration with students from different academic disciplines—including engineering and architecture students, who rarely work together until they enter the workplace.
• Students gain support to attend colleges/universities in Michigan.

Environment

• The home demonstrates the potential of sustainable innovations and best practices in energy efficiency and green building.
• Our efforts raise awareness about renewable energy and energy efficiency, and how sustainable design can reduce energy usage.
• Our efforts promote an integrated or "whole building design" approach to new construction, meaning the design team considers the interactions of all building components and systems to create a more comfortable building, save energy, and reduce environmental impact.

Economic

• Build UP! creates a pipeline of talent for Michigan companies, and pipeline of internship and job opportunities for students.
• Increased tourism to Build UP! home locations.
• Demonstration of the uniqueness and availability of Michigan-made products and services (e.g. Whirlpool appliances, university-developed technologies) by showcasing them in the construction of the house.
• Generation of excitement about Michigan – visiting Michigan, going to school in Michigan, and working in Michigan.
