The question, “How are you?” is one of the most common greetings in English. It’s also a pretty basic question that can be answered with a single word. But what if we could ask our friends how they’re feeling? What if we could ask Alexa about their day? How would we answer these questions without words?

SANTA CLARA (California) – It doesn’t take long for secrets to become public in a tiny community like Fargo, North Dakota, particularly when it comes to the North Dakota State quarterback.

That’s why, even as starting quarterback Brock Jensen led the Bison to three straight FCS national titles between 2011 and 2013, rumors about scout team quarterback Carson Wentz’s practice-field exploits grew to legendary proportions.

When Wentz was given his chance in 2014, he wasted little time in establishing himself via hard effort and early morning film sessions.

Wentz, who is currently the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, believed that his hard work will pay off on the field. What he didn’t realize was that it would become a Bison quarterback tradition, which would be carried on by Easton Stick, now a backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers, and Trey Lance, the San Francisco 49ers’ No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL draft.

“What’s really nice about our quarterbacks is that we want them to create their own legacy,” said Randy Hedberg, Bison quarterback coach. “We didn’t want Easton to take on the role of Carson. We didn’t want Trey to become like Easton. They must focus on what they do best.”

Lance’s 49ers will face Wentz’s Colts at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night, and that legacy will be on display (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC).

Wentz will start for the Colts, and although Lance’s prognosis for Sunday is unknown due to a left knee injury, his absence will not dampen the enthusiasm of the city’s 126,000 or so residents. The former Bison quarterbacks’ achievements fill the community with pride.

The quarterbacks feel the same way, having cultivated two of the most unexpected top-three NFL draft selections in recent memory.

“It’s a huge deal for the state, and it’s a big deal for that part of the nation,” Wentz said. “The football program up there deserves a lot of credit, particularly with two quarterbacks. It demonstrates that North Dakota State prepares and teaches football in the proper manner.”

Wentz jumped right into the job. Hedberg remembers receiving a phone call from a fan informing him that a young guy in the hospital was a Wentz high school classmate (Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota). He inquired as to whether Wentz would pay him a visit.

Hedberg sent the message to Wentz, who paid a surprise visit to his coach. Such tales became part of Wentz’s Fargo legacy, which he built upon with the creation of his Audience of One organization and annual charity baseball game.

“I didn’t waste any time once I realized I was going to have a platform and be a draft selection,” Wentz said. “I wanted to give back as much as I could.”

Lance was also conscious of his responsibilities.

The community has a “flood fight” in the spring, in which volunteers help to build one million sandbags. You must fill a sandbag every eight minutes or so. Lance was a willing participant despite the fact that it was boring labor for anybody, much alone a great quarterback.

Lance utilized his position to speak out on social justice concerns after the death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020. He took part in peaceful demonstrations in Fargo and wrote “BLM” for Black Lives Matter and the number “204” on his cleats in the lone game he played that season, which was the number of days after Breonna Taylor was shot and murdered by police in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tim Mahoney, the mayor of Fargo, was deeply affected by it all.

Lance, according to Mahoney, “sees the larger picture” and “we feel very strongly that he understands it.”

When Wentz and Lance visit town these days, they often contact Brent Tehven, Herd & Horns’ joint owner and general manager, to see if they may visit the private room.

Wentz doesn’t get back as often as he’d like, but he still swings by for a burger and fries once or twice a year, often on his way to what he describes as a “borderline second to none” bird-hunting excursion.

“If they have time when they come to town, they try to stop in and say hello,” Tehven added. “When they visit town, they have a location where they feel secure. Our supporters love seeing them, but for the most part, they keep their distance.”

Fargo is more than just a Vikings town, particularly on a Sunday night like this.

Fargo, which is almost 240 miles northwest of Minneapolis along I-94, is still a Minnesota Vikings town for all intents and purposes. However, with nine former Bison on NFL rosters, keeping track of them all has proven difficult.

That’s why Hansen pushed for a weekly section on Bison players in the NFL to be included in the Bison radio broadcasts’ pregame program.

Hansen said, “That’s my method of making sure I stay up with what’s going on with those people.”

Many TVs at Herd & Horns are tuned to the Vikings on any given Sunday, but there are always some set aside for Wentz, typically in the early window, and others for Lance, usually in the later window.

One game will light up all of the screens on Sunday night, when Lance’s Niners take against Wentz’s Colts. What criteria will fans use to choose which quarterback to support?

Hedberg said he wouldn’t be shocked if Wentz gets a small advantage since he is from North Dakota, but he isn’t sure enough in his prediction to place odds on it, predicting a close race.

Tehven intends to fly to the Bay Area at 5 a.m. to attend the game in person. He also expects his group to be divided, with everyone hoping for both quarterbacks to pass for 300 yards and three touchdowns, as well as one side to score a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

“It’s difficult to choose who you’re going to cheer for,” Mahoney remarked. “It helps in putting Fargo and NDSU on the map. This is very beneficial to our community’s recruitment efforts. People don’t remark, ‘Oh Fargo,’ while I’m out and about. ‘You have these terrific quarterbacks and this wonderful football program,’ they remark. As a result, we have a lot of fun with it.”

The nd state football qb is a question that has been asked in the past. The answer to this question is QB.
