It’s been a long time since the Democrats have had to worry about losing an election. But in 2016, the Republicans were so sure of their victory that they began counting votes before Election Day even started.
The I Think We’re Counting Like the Republicans is a quote from Doc Rivers, head coach of the Boston Celtics. It’s about how he thinks that his team has been counting like the Republican party.
Doc Rivers, the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, has had a difficult few months. First, his club lost a devastating seven-game series against the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Rivers was questioned about franchise point guard Ben Simmons’ choice to give up a wide-open dunk in the closing minutes of Game 7 immediately after his team’s loss.
The former coach of the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, and Los Angeles Clippers has spent the last several months debating (and rebating) Simmons’ future with the Sixers. To be fair, it was one of his lowest moments in his career, but Rivers can always be relied on for a nice remark, and one of his finest came during last year’s first-round series against the Washington Wizards.
During the 2021 playoffs, Rivers and the Sixers welcomed supporters back into the arena.

The NBA gradually let spectators into stadiums for the playoffs in places where it was feasible as more people were vaccinated against the coronavirus (COVID-19). According to ActionNetwork.com, most clubs saw around 10,000 fans return for playoff games.
For their first-round series against Washington, the Philadelphia 76ers were permitted 10,000 supporters inside the Wells Fargo Center. Supporters are always welcome, but Philly fans are known for being loud and emotional.
After a win at home, Rivers acknowledged that he had taken notice.
Tobias Harris scored 37 points to lead Philadelphia to a 125-118 victory in Game 1 of the series. The Sixers had gotten off to a 1-0 start in the playoffs, and the crowd had returned. Everything worked out well.
According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, Rivers was questioned about the home fans after the victory, and he replied in classic Doc Rivers fashion:
“I can’t believe there was 10,000 or 11,000 people,” says the speaker. There isn’t a chance. It seemed like 30,000 people in the stands, so I believe we’re counting like the Republicans. They were incredible.”
After Game 1 of last year’s first-round series against Washington, Rivers went off on the Sixers supporters.
Philly won Game 2 at home and then won Game 5 in front of their home crowd to finish off the series. During last year’s playoffs, the 76ers only won one more home game and ultimately lost the series clincher against Atlanta.
Before his summer took a turn for the worst, Rivers at least had some fun.
ESPN’s First Take features Doc Rivers. Here are a few key points to remember: -Philadelphia 76ers aren’t given up on Ben Simmons. -Rivers claims Simmons has informed the 76ers’ leadership that he wants out “We’d love to have Ben back… We’d want him to return.” -His comments on Simmons after the G7 were distorted.

Late in Game 7, Simmons missed a wide-open dunk that would have given Philadelphia the lead. During their individual post-game news conferences, both Rivers and Joel Embiid were questioned about their point guard’s choice, and both offered honest responses. They were irritated, which was understandable.
The team’s head coach and 14-year NBA veteran has been besieged with more questions regarding Simmons’ future in recent months, if anything, it’s become worse. The story seems to have no conclusion in sight for the time being.
But, for one night before the storm, Rivers and the Sixers were able to win a playoff game in front of their home fans, and Philly’s boss was able to have a little fun with it.
