It’s not just screen time any more

In other words: this isn’t just another app category. It’s a new kind of relationship space – with very few guardrails.

How AI companions can affect teens

There are possible upsides:

  • Shy or isolated teens might practice conversation and feel less alone.
  • Some find it easier to write about feelings to a bot than to a parent at first.

But the risks are real:

Here’s how to keep this grounded and not terrifying.

1. Ask, don’t accuse

You don’t need to do this alone:

  • Most kids (around 92% of 8–17 year-olds) now get at least one online-safety lesson at school, and almost half say those lessons are “very useful.”
  • Pediatricians, school counselors, and local child-safety organizations often have updated resources about AI, deepfakes, and online abuse.

If something feels over your head – like deepfake threats or sextortion – get professional advice early rather than hoping it goes away.

You can’t bubble-wrap your child’s digital life, and you can’t realistically ban AI from their world. What you can do is:

  • Stay curious about what they’re doing online
  • Set clear, age-appropriate boundaries
  • Treat AI companions as a serious topic, not a punchline
  • Make sure your kid’s main emotional support comes from humans, not an app

AI chats and virtual partners are not automatically evil. But for a teen brain that’s still wiring up its sense of self, boundaries, and relationships, they can be a powerful force – for better or worse.

Your job isn’t to be perfect or to catch every risky app. It’s to be the person your kid trusts enough to say, “Hey… there’s this AI I’ve been talking to, and I’m not sure how I feel about it.”
