1. Set Goals

One of the most important things to do as you begin your fitness regime is setting goals. I began by taking a 20-minute walk in the morning before the kids woke up. Gradually I began extending  my walks, and I now walk after supper too.

My main aim is to lose weight, so I set goals such as reducing 8 pounds per month. By doing this, I have also managed to add small workout sessions to my fitness routine, which I do when the kids are busy playing or watching TV.

2. Find Another Parent

Exercising with a partner is always more interesting. If you have a neighbor or friend who also is a parent, it is possible to exercise together.

The perfect time to do it would be in the morning, after the kids are dropped to school or on weekends when no school is in session. You could challenge your partner by seeing who walks home first.

You can also join an aerobics class or work out at the gym together. Find exercises that you both enjoy doing. This will make you look forward to gossiping with your partner while working out every day.

3.  Home Workout Equipment

If you are unable to visit the gym or participate in other fitness programs, there is no need to worry. You can consider investing in home workout equipment. A treadmill, yoga mat, and a set of dumbbells should be enough.

All of this equipment can help you work out at home regularly. You can always hire a personal fitness trainer who can conduct one-to-one fitness sessions with you at home. My instructor used to come to my place on weekend mornings to teach me yoga, which you can consider doing too.

Ensure you keep your exercise equipment in one place so that they are safe and the whole house does not get messy. If you have children, they are bound to climb up on your treadmill, which could cause accidents.

4. Try To Stay Active Throughout The Day

Some days, you will probably have a hectic schedule, and you won’t find enough time for your fitness sessions. On those days, you can try physical activities. Some of these include walking to the grocery store instead of taking the bus.  You could also climb up the stairs instead of using the elevator while you are out.

If you are stuck at home, you could do a few squats when folding the laundry. I usually squeeze in a few pushups while playing with the kids.

5. Healthy Diet

To maintain your fitness, you need to change your diet. As a result, I consume more fruits and vegetables. For instance, in the past, I would take a bag of chips or a chocolate bag as a snack. However, having started exercising, I rarely eat junk food; instead, I take fruit or go for some fruit-blend smoothies.

More importantly, you must ensure you take enough water throughout the day. Whether you are outdoors  or at home, it’s recommended that you always take a water bottle with you. And please don’t give up on your favorite food altogether. A couple of slices of pizza or a burger occasionally is acceptable!

6. Involve Your Kids

Involving the kids in workout sessions is a fun way to spend time together and stay fit. You can go for bicycle rides, race each other in the backyard, or play football in the nearby park.

If you want to stay home, you could arrange a dance party where you all dance your heart out. A family yoga session could be relaxing, too.
